Software License Buying Checklist: 12 Things to Check Before Paying

A clear product listing should answer practical questions before checkout. Use this checklist for Windows, Office, Autodesk, security software, and other digital licenses.

Check the product identity

1. What exact software and edition is included? 2. Is it perpetual, subscription-based, or limited to a defined term? 3. Is the license for one device, multiple devices, or an account? 4. Which operating systems and versions are supported?

Check delivery and activation

5. Will delivery be by key, account, activation link, or another method? 6. Where will the credentials appear after payment? 7. What information is required to activate it? 8. Is the product intended for a new installation, an upgrade, or a renewal?

Check the store and support process

9. Is there a real support contact and a written refund policy? 10. Does the seller explain what happens if delivery is delayed? 11. Can you retrieve the order record later from an account or email? 12. Are the payment page and the public site using HTTPS?

Keep expectations realistic

A low price does not remove the need to check terms. Do not buy a license that conflicts with your edition, device count, organization policy, or intended use. Save the order number and product information, but keep activation secrets private.
