Windows 10 to Windows 11 Upgrade Checklist

Moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is easier when you prepare the computer before starting setup. The safest upgrade plan protects your files, confirms hardware compatibility, and records activation details.

Check compatibility first

Use Microsoft’s current PC Health Check guidance and verify the main requirements, including supported processor generation, available storage, UEFI configuration, Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. A computer that can run Windows 10 is not automatically eligible for Windows 11.

Back up before upgrading

Copy important documents, browser exports, project files, and license records to a trusted backup location. Test opening at least one backed-up file. Keep the backup disconnected or protected while the upgrade runs.

Check drivers and applications

Update critical drivers from the device manufacturer and list applications you cannot work without. Confirm that CAD tools, printers, scanners, VPN clients, security tools, and business applications support the target Windows version.

Record activation information

Open the Activation page and note the installed edition and activation status. A Windows 11 license must match the edition being installed. Keep the order record or digital-license account information private but accessible.

Verify after the upgrade

Install updates, restart, check Activation, test Wi-Fi and audio, open important files, and confirm that external devices work. Do not delete the backup until you have completed a normal workday on the upgraded system.
