Office Setup and Activation Checklist for a New PC

A clean Office setup is easier when you separate preparation, installation, sign-in, and verification. Rushing through those stages can create duplicate installations or activate the wrong account.

Before installing

  • Finish Windows updates and restart the computer.
  • Remove an unwanted trial or older Office installation if it conflicts with the edition you plan to use.
  • Confirm available disk space and the Windows edition.
  • Save important documents and export any custom templates or add-ins.
  • Decide which Microsoft account should own the license or subscription.

During installation

Use the official installation path associated with the license or account. Check the product name and edition before clicking through. Avoid installing several Office suites at once unless you understand how their licensing and update channels interact.

After installation

Open Word or Excel, sign in when prompted, and visit the Account page inside the application. Confirm the displayed product matches the license you purchased. If you see a trial, an expired subscription, or the wrong account, stop and correct it before creating important files.

Verify updates and file compatibility

Install current updates, open a sample document, and test any essential add-ins or macros. If you collaborate with others, check the file formats and sharing workflow you use most often.

Keep recovery information private

Store the order record and account recovery information securely. Never post an activation key or password in screenshots. If support is needed, provide the product name, account email in a secure channel, and the non-secret error message.
